Scoles has a national and international reputation as a legal educator and scholar. His career includes professorial appointments at leading universities and tenure as dean of the University of Oregon School of Law from 1968 to 1974. Scoles then served as a distinguished professor of law at Oregon until his retirement in 1981. A life member of the American Law Institute, his work with the Hague Conference on Private International Law, the National Conference on Uniform Laws, and the National Conference of Bar Examiners demonstrate his efforts to improve the law and the legal profession. He is a past president of the Association of American Law Schools.
