Kirkpatrick served as counsel to the head of the Criminal Division at the U.S. Department of Justice and also as a commissioner, ex officio, on the U.S. Sentencing Commission in Washington, D.C. He is a nationally known scholar in evidence law, author of the leading Oregon treatise on evidence, and co-author of three national treatises on evidence. Before joining the UO faculty in 1974, he was a trial lawyer in private practice, executive director of the Portland Legal services program, and an assistant U.S. attorney. Kirkpatrick was elected to be a life member of the American Law Institute, a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a delegate representing the Oregon Bar in the American Bar Association House of Delegates, and a director of the American Judicature Society. He received the UO Ersted Award for distinguished teaching, among other teaching awards.
