first woman chief of Cherokee Nation The first female chief of the Cherokee Nation has
been selected as the next holder of the Wayne Morse Chair of Law and
Politics at the University of Oregon School of Law.
This fall, Wilma Mankiller will teach an upper-division ethnic studies class,
Native American Life, Law and Leadership, with Rennard Strickland,
former dean of the law school and the Philip Knight Professor of Law.
She intends to focus on contemporary tribal issues and put them into a
historical context, as well as banish prevailing stereotypes of the
images of Native Americans in both her work on campus and with the
public.
She and her husband, Charlie Soap, a highly regarded expert on
community action and leadership, soon will leave their home in Oklahoma
to live in Eugene.
We plan to immerse ourselves in the campus and community, she says,
and also work with tribal groups throughout the Northwest.
