WORKSHOP: Basic Mediation Training
Knight Law Center. Basic mediation training with focus on
communication, uncovering disputantÃs interests and helping
participants find their own solutions. The 30-hour training focuses on
mediator skills. At the end, you will be able to work in a community
mediation setting and will have developed skills for the conflicts of
everyday life. Cost is $175 for students, $450 for UO faculty and
staff. Includes materials, lunches and refreshments. Write checks to UO
School of Law. Payment must accompany registration. INFO

SYMPOSIUM: Against the Grain: Working for the Public Interest
Noon-5:00 P.M., Wayne Morse Commons, Rooms 110 and 175. As a law clerk,
keynoter John Affeldt assisted in the trial of Panamanian strongman
Manuel Noriega, recently served as lead counsel in a 2004 class action
that won new educational guarantees for thousands of CaliforniaÃs
poorest school children and now heads Public Advocates,
a thirty-five-year-old San
Francisco law firm that advocates for the poor and dispossessed.
California Lawyer magazine named him 2004 Attorney of the Year. He will
be joined by others who have chosen to work in the public interest at
this symposium organized by PIPS, the law schoolÃs public
interest/public service program.

DEAN STEPS DOWN
Evidence expert Laird Kirkpatrick steps down as dean. Kirkpatrick is
the Hollis Professor of Legal Procedure. He is a 1968 graduate of the
law school and has been a member of the faculty since 1974.
