A Legacy of Service: Oregon and the Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship
The ENR Program is proud to announce that 2007 graduate Nick Klingensmith has
been offered the Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship. This prestigious one-year fellowship matches highly qualified graduate students
with "hosts" in the legislative and executive branches of the United States government. Klingensmith has accepted an offer to work in the State Dept. Office of Marine
Conservation. "I am very excited about the opportunity that has been made available
to me," says Klingensmith. "The primary reason why I decided to quit my previous career as a fishing guide
and go to law school was that I wanted to work on natural resources issues, especially
in marine and fisheries policy, and it is now very gratifying to have my law school
experience lead to this fellowship offer. It makes me feel like my decision to go to law school in the first place has
been validated."
Nick is the latest graduate to join the law schools growing legacy of Knauss
Fellows. Since the Fellowship was established in 1979, eleven other UO Law grads have
served as Fellows. That list includes Jeffery Ballweber (91), Robert Shavelson (93), Brita Otteson-Hurst
(94), Mara Brown (95), Glenn Boledovich (98), Sharonne OShea (96), Joy Mulinex
(98), Dan Terrell (99), Camilla Johnston (02), Kassandra Brown (02), and Rachel
Peitsch (02). "The number of Knauss Fellowships which have gone to UO law students demonstrates
the strength and endurance of our thirty-nine year old Ocean & Coastal Law
Program," says Professor Richard Hildreth, Director of the Ocean & Coastal
Law Program, "I hope and expect that this tradition will continue." For more information on the Knauss Fellowship, please visit http://www.seagrant.noaa.gov/knauss/photos/2008_fellows/index.html.
