Professor Svitlana Kravchenko Re-nominated to Aarhus Convention Compliance Committee
Professor Svitlana Kravchenko, Director of Oregon Laws Environmental and Natural
Resources Law LL.M. Program, was recently unanimously re-nominated to the Compliance
Committee of the Aarhus Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation
in Decision-Marking and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters. Committee elections will be held at the meeting of the Parties in June at Riga,
Latvia. Upon election, Professor Kravchenko will serve a four-year term on the Committee. She previously served as the Committees vice-chair.
Adopted in 1998 by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the Convention
addresses three broad issues: access to information, public participation and access to justice.
Professor Kravchenko is the founder and president of Environment-People-Law,
the first public interest environmental law firm in Ukraine. She is also co-founder and co-director of the Association of Environmental Law
of Central and Eastern Europe.
In September 2007, Professor Kravchenko, along with Oregon Law Professor John
Bonine, gave speeches on expanding and implementing access to justice at the United
Nations Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
