March 7th 2008 Oregon Law Students Compete in Mediation Competition
Oregon Law students Laura Williamson, Jia Min Cheng, Michelle Platt and Amanda
Fernandez recently competed at the American Bar Associations Representation in
Mediation Competition for Law Students regional competition at the University
of Californias Hastings College of the Law.
Both teams artfully combined the appropriate use of advocacy skills with collaborative
problem solving skills in order to advance opportunities for achieving mutually
supportable agreements, while at the same time meeting the clients best interests,
said Carrie Heltzel, administrator of the Oregon Office for Community Dispute
Resolution and the students coach for the competition.
During the competition, students role-played as advocates and clients in a mediation
setting. Students were judged on preparation, teamwork, how well the interests of the
client are represented, using opportunities in the mediation process, and other
elements of effective advocacy in mediation. The Oregon Law students out-performed 20 competitors at Oregon Laws Alternative
Dispute Resolution Advocates annual mediation advocacy competition in February
to advance to the competition.
