Upcoming Events

ADRB has been working hard to bring exciting events to the law school.

October 9

Room 142 at noon.

The Appropriate Dispute Resolution Center is pleased to announce that James E. McGuire, a mediator with JAMS in Boston, Massachusetts, will lead a lunchtime discussion on mediation in China. Please join us on Friday, October 9th at 12:00 PM in Room 142 for his presentation, "Modern Mediation in China: One U.S. Perspective".

Mr. McGuire has been part of an international exchange program on mediation with Chinese judges and professors. Mediation in China is both very ancient and very modern. China has decided that mediation shall be the preferred form of dispute resolution. In this program, Mr. McGuire will discuss some aspects of the exchange. Come with your thoughts and questions.

Please RSVP to broadous@uoregon.edu by Thursday, October 8th. Pizza will be provided.

October 15

Room 142 at noon.

Over 25 years ago, Yale professor Owen Fiss wrote Against Settlement, an essay decrying the increasing popularity of settlement and ADR practices generally. It remains provocative and influential today. Last year, Fordham Law School convened a symposium at which prominent legal scholars, Owen Fiss among them, revisited the ideas expressed in Against Settlement in light of the past quarter century. University of Oregon School of Law professor and ADR proponent Michael Moffitt was among those invited to speak. The paper he delivered was entitled Three Things to Be Against ("Settlement" Not Included). Join us on Conflict Resolution Day to hear Professor Moffitt give a version of this address. Pizza will be provided, courtesy of the Appropriate Dispute Resolution Board.

October 29

The Fall Mediation Competition is modeled after Small Claims Court Mediations. It creates an opportunity for students to explore mediation in a friendly supportive environment and get comments from real judges and mediators. It is also a unique competition because it allows both First Year and CRES students to participate. Sign-up sheets will be posted soon!

November 5

Room 142 at noon.

Join us for a lunchtime talk by Rich Spier, who has a full-time practice as arbitrator and mediator in Portland. Mr. Spier will discuss and answer questions about how ADR is actually used in civil practice today in Oregon and career paths to serving as ADR neutrals for law students.
