November 16th - Media, Law and Conflict Event:
The University of Oregon School of Law's Appropriate Dispute Resolution Center, along with the UO's School of Journalism and Communication and the Missouri Center for the Study of Conflict, Law and the Media, is organizing a conference entitled, "Interest-Based Reporting: Elevating the Coverage of Conflict," on Friday, November 16th.
What is "interest-based" reporting?
Description of the concept of "interest-based" reporting:
Contemporary "competing-sides" coverage of social conflict does not fulfill normatively desirable journalism goals, doesn’t give readers what research says they want, and contributes to the media’s present credibility crisis. Other models have tried to get at this, such as civic and peace journalism, but have been criticized because they transform the media from observer to participant in conflict. We propose a new model for the coverage of social conflict that integrates conflict theory into journalism practice that we call Interest-Based Reporting.
The model draws on the conflict theory distinction between positions (what we say we want) and interests (the underlying needs, interests, and concerns that drive positions). Much conflict reporting focuses on positions, but we suggest that shifting the focus to interests will provide for richer, deeper, more compelling, more important and more desirable coverage of conflict. The theory also draws on other aspects of conflict theory in suggesting that, among other things, reporters focus on issues that underlie events, discuss the causes/impacts of conflict rather than mere blame, emphasize substance over process, broaden their source bases, and take more care in framing their stories
