August 18, 2008 Oregon Law Welcomes Visiting Professor Gabriel Eckstein

Oregon Law is pleased to welcome Visiting Professor Gabriel Eckstein. Professor Eckstein is a member of the faculty at Texas Tech University School of Law, where he is the George W. McCleskey Professor of Water Law and the director of the Center for Water Law & Policy.

Professor Eckstein received a dual bachelor's degree from Kent State University, a master's degree from Florida State University, and a juris doctorate and master of laws degree from American University's Washington College of Law. His scholarly focus is in international environmental law, particularly in freshwater resources. Due to his expertise, Professor Eckstein has served as an advisor or consultant to numerous organizations in the U.S. and abroad. Presently, he serves as an advisor to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization and the UNESCO/OAS International Shared Aquifer Resources Management of the Americas. Professor Eckstein also directs the internet-based International Water Law Project, which provides information on water law, policy, and related topics.

Professor Eckstein previously directed the Office of Special Programs and Advanced Legal Studies at American University. Prior to joining academia, he practiced with Sutter & Enslein in Charleston, W.Va., and served as in-house counsel for CropLife America, the nation's largest agricultural trade organization.

Professor Eckstein will teach Civil Procedure, and a seminar in Law and Science.

August 18, 2008 Oregon Law Welcomes Visiting Professor Roberta Mann

Oregon Law is pleased to welcome Visiting Professor Roberta Mann. Professor Mann is a tax, property, and environmental law expert from Delaware's Widener University School of Law, where she has taught federal income tax and property law since 1998.

Before joining the Widener faculty, Professor Mann worked in the Office of Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service, where she focused on corporate, partnership, estate and gift tax, and natural resources tax. She also spent one year on staff at the United States Congress Joint Committee on Taxation.

Professor Mann received her bachelor's degree, master's degree, and juris doctorate from Arizona State University, and master of laws from the Georgetown University Law Center. She is a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel and is active in a number of professional and civic organizations.

Professor Mann has penned numerous articles on tax law, with several of her more recent pieces focusing on environmental tax issues. Her landmark article, "Waiting to Exhale?: Global Warming and Tax Policy," was published in 2002 by the American University Law Review. Her recent works include a law review article, "Trading Greenbacks for Green Behavior: Oregon and the City of Portland's Environmental Incentives," and a book chapter, "Subsidies, Tax Policy, and Technological Innovation," which appears in Global Climate Change and U.S. Law.

Professor Mann will teach Federal Tax I and II, Tax Policy Seminar, and Property.

August 5, 2008 Professor Hildreth to Publish Casebook on Climate Change

Congratulations to Professor Hildreth! Hildreth has been asked by West Publishing to prepare the first law school casebook on Climate Change, entitled "Climate Change Law: Mitigation and Adaptation." Professor Hildreth will be co-authoring the book with Professor David Hodas of Widener Law School, Professor Nicholas Robinson of Pace Law School and Dean James Gustave Speth of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. The book will be one of the first textbooks on this important topic. It will prepare law students across the nation to use their professional skills to reduce climate change trends and help clients adjust to climate changes that do occur. The book is expected out by fall of next year.

July 25, 2008 Oregon Law Professors Participate in Public Interest Environmental Litigation Workshop in South Africa

Oregon Law Professors John Bonine and Svitlana Kravchenko took part in a workshop on Public Interest Environmental Litigation hosted by the University of Witwatersrand School of Law's Mandela Institute in Johannesburg, South Africa. This was the first workshop of its kind to be hosted by the South African law school.
