Promoting Sustainability Through Innovation and Entrepreneurship

As our consciences awaken to the realities of climate change and resource scarcity, private enterprise has found a receptive market for the technology that will help the concerned citizen be a better steward of the environment. Law Students for Sustainable Business believe not only in the promise of this burgeoning industry, but that the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of private enterprise might provide the most direct and reliable path to environmental sustainability.

Law Students for Sustainable Business seek to create a forum to discuss the role that the law can play in supporting the entrepreneurs that will change the way people interact with the environment.

Beginning this year, we plan to host a Sustainable Business Symposium where we invite distinguished speakers from industry, government and academia to share their vision for a future that is both technologically and environmentally sophisticated. Topics will include Renewable Energy Policy, Sustainable Venture Capital Investment, Carbon Taxes and the Feasibility of a Carbon Market, as well as Sustainable Development and Green Building.

The Law Students for Sustainable Business will make a gift of approximately $40,000 to the law library to create a new Sustainable Business Collection. This gift will purchase over 350 books and videos, building a collection unique in the Northwest. The funding will provide a level of excellence in library support that could not otherwise be achieved. It is particularly significant that the funds were put together from a coalition of sources including the ASUO, by students, for students. The new collection will be available to all students and faculty at the University of Oregon for cross-disciplinary research and development in this vital field. As law student Casey Whelan explained, "Sustainable business and renewable energy development are issues that affect everyone, and the University has the chance to become a leader in the field." Board members of the Law Students for Sustainable Business include Casey Whelan, Matt Schroettnig, Joe Kraus, Scott Schneider, Rob Illig, faculty advisor, and Ed Einowski, industry advisor.

We invite you to join us for meetings and discussions.
