International Internships
Anticipated Internships 2008
Currently we anticipate that we will have three legal internship programs for summer 2008. Applicants are advised that available internship programs are subject to change based on travel warnings.
- Navdanya: India
The purpose of Dr. Vandana Shiva's Navdanya Research Foundation for Science, Ecology and Technology is to rescue, conserve, and prevent the privatization of seed rights for disappearing crops and plants, thus supporting local farmers.
OILP anticipates that we will send 2 legal interns to Navdanya in 2008. In working with Dr. Shiva, legal interns will focus on water, seed and Intellectual Property rights; assist in filing lawsuits on behalf of indigenous groups in India; and conduct analysis of Indian Supreme Court cases dealing with these issues. - International Center for Ethnic Studies: Sri Lanka
The focus of the International Center for Ethnic Studies (ICES) is the social and political processes related to ethnicity. ICES, located in Colombo, has consultative status with the United Nations.
OILP anticipates that we will send one legal intern to ICES in 2008. Legal interns will focus on in depth research and analysis on human and ethnic rights and will formally present research before ICES board and professional legal community. For more information on ICES, visit: www.icescolombo.org
- International Alliance: Thailand
The purpose of the International Alliance is to increase international awareness and respect for the rights of indigenous and tribal peoples. The International Alliance focuses on rights related to territory, land ownership and use, forest policy, biodiversity and conservation, intellectual property, and development policy.
OILP anticipates that it will send one legal intern to the International Alliance in 2008. Legal interns will conduct policy analysis and prepare legal memoranda and related policy documents on rights of indigenous groups in East Asia and Latin America.
