2008-2009 Interim Director: Peter Howard

Mission Statement: To generate awareness of domestic violence in the local community, provide community members with a basic framework of their legal rights and responsibilities, and to help others identify the underlying sociological tensions that arise in a domestic violence related trial.

Program Overview: Domestic Violence Street Law conducted several presentations at local Eugene high schools in the 2006-07 school year. Law school volunteers organized domestic abuse statistics and information into a short interactive presentation appropriate for high school students studying family law. The presentation also included a mock trial portion with characters being played by the high school students. The trial engaged the students in conversation on domestic violence and helped them to ultimately to realize the unavoidable implications of abuse on all members of a family. In the coming year we plan to continue the growth of the outreach classes as well as bring family law practitioners to University of Oregon School of Law for discussions on this important topic. As always, Domestic Violence Street Law welcomes new volunteers (no previous family law experience required) and any suggestions for expansion.
