Candidates for Community Outreach Coordinator

Heather Case - First choice: Secretary; Second Choice: Community Outreach Coordinator

I have been involved in many groups throughout my first year as a law student and during my undergraduate education. As a 1L I have been the 1L rep for law students for reproductive justice. I have also gone to many WLF events and would love to get more involved in this group and foster more connections in the Oregon Law community. I have event planning experience from my time with Phi Alpha Delta and the V-Day committee for three years in my undergrad at Western Oregon University. I am organized and have helped with both small and large events for diverse groups. I would like to be secretary because I believe I have the organizational and time management skills to be on top of booking rooms and distributing minutes that a good secretary needs. I would be interested in being the Community Outreach Coordinator as well. I would be able to attend meetings of both WLF and SBA and would enjoy the opportunity to represent WLF at those meetings and to our community.

Kristin Denmark - First Choice: Secretary; Second Choice: Community Outreach Coordinator

As a 1L I attended many WLF events, and I hope to become more involved by serving as a member of the WLF executive board as Secretary (1st choice) or Community Outreach Coordinator (2nd choice). I am organized, dedicated, and have experience taking minutes at meetings -- all skills that would help me succeed in either position. Prior to law school, I worked in a law firm for three years and last served as the HR Manager. That position required me to organize personnel information for over 100 employees and to schedule inter-departmental meetings, take minutes, and email those minutes to the entire firm. In undergrad, I was a member of a prestigious four-year leadership group and I held two leadership positions within that group. I was responsible for coordinating monthly seminar events, which required me to find a speaker from the community, oversee the catering, and locate a venue. This semester, I started volunteering at Legal Aid as an intake specialist which requires interacting with a diverse client base. Through Legal Aid, I am learning a lot about Lane County non-profits and state agencies. I have thoroughly enjoyed attending WLF events this year, and I am excited about the opportunity to become more involved by serving on the WLF executive board as Secretary or Community Outreach Coordinator.

Elizabeth Holsapple - First Choice: Public Relations Officer; Second Choice: Community Outreach Coordinator

It has been my goal from day one to become more involved with the WLF and I therefore now submit my application for Public Relations Officer and Community Outreach Coordinator. Women's rights have long been a passion of mine, stemming from a family of strong women who rocked the 60's. During high school I was involved in a community organization called the Michigan Women's Foundation (MWF) where I helped lead a campaign to stop violent assaults on young school girls and distributed grants to non-profits aimed at helping the women of metro-Detroit. As a member of the MWF, I served as the face for the Young Women's branch both to the local media and to city council. I continued similar work during college as a women's studies minor and as an active member in our student women's group. During college I also held executive board positions (President, Vice President, and Treasurer) for two other academic student organizations. Some of my primary responsibilities included organizing school-wide events and reaching out to students and the Chicago community. Outside of college, I utilized these skills while working for a start-up company and for the campaign. In both positions I was responsible for alerting the local community of upcoming presentations, rallies, and events as well as organizing small conferences. I wish to bring my background in community organization and public outreach to one of these positions. I look forward to an opportunity to continue working with the students, faculty, staff, and community I have gotten to know over the year while serving on the board for ADR, assisting in faculty interviews, and attending alumni events. Thank you for your consideration!

Katherine Hunt - First Choice: Conference Coordinator; Second Choice: Community Outreach Coordinator

I have a great deal of experience coordinating events both as an undergrad and through my job prior to law school, and I believe I would make an excellent Conference Coordinator or Community Outreach Coordinator for WLF. In college, I gained a significant amount of experience as the Events Coordinator for Alpha Phi Sorority. I was solely responsible for organizing all social events. This included booking venues, security guards, caterers, and arranging transportation. After college, I worked at a law firm in downtown Seattle and was responsible for organizing the meetings, depositions, mediations, and arbitrations that took place at our firm. I am incredibly organized, and I absolutely love working with people. I believe I have the enthusiasm and skill set necessary to make a great Conference Coordinator or Community Outreach Coordinator for WLF.

Autumn Johnson (1st Choice: Community Outreach; 2nd Choice: PR)

I have been very involved within the law school in the last two years. I have been the secretary of the National Lawyers Guild, the Outreach Coordinator for Land Air Water, and the Co-Chair for Law Students for Reproductive Justice. I have also been involved with main campus. My 1L year I worked for the ASUO Women's Center. I have also worked with several community organizations, including Womenspace, SASS, CLDC, Planned Parenthood, Network for Reproductive Options, the ACLU, NLG, and other environmental groups. In these roles I have helped plan events, ran meetings, publicized events, and collaborated with other organizations. I would really like to be more involved with WLF. I attended WLF events during my 1L and 2L years, but I would really like to be more involved be working to help plan and publicize events and work with the wonderful WLF members and faculty that make WLF such a successful organization. I would like to be the Community Outreach Coordinator because I have had the privilege of working with several campus and community organizations and I think these connections and experience will help WLF. I am also interested in being the PR Rep. I have had experience publicizing events for the Women's Center, NLG, LAW, and LSRJ and I believe I have the organization and contacts to be effective in this position. I am very interested in either position.

Katrina King - First Choice: Community Outreach Coordinator; Second Choice: Secretary

I am a 1L and have attended and enjoyed most of the WLF events this year. I would love to be more involved with the Women's Law Forum next year. Prior to becoming a law student, I was a resource specialist. My job was to find referrals of all kinds for clients: low income housing, mentor programs, event locations, products, and other services. This position required extensive phone and email inquiries, written communication to clients, and imagination. In my position as a resource specialist, I was also a member of the In-Service Committee, and coordinated bringing in various speakers on topics such as foreclosure and intercultural communication. I have also been a group leader for volunteer groups at OPB radio fundraising drives. I am interested in either the position as the community outreach coordinator or as the secretary. Thank you.

Maria Di Miceli - First Choice: Community Outreach Coordinator; Second Choice: Conference Coordinator

Hello Ladies! I would be honored to serve as your Community Outreach Coordinator (#1 choice) or Conference Coordinator (#2) and feel that I am qualified and have the drive to do an excellent job.

  1. I am fun, outgoing, responsible, well spoken, resourceful, organized, and dynamic! I enjoy organizing events and communicating with people to get them excited about our causes/events.
  2. I sincerely believe in WLF's goals, positioning me well as an organizer/spokesperson for us! I have been very involved with WLF events this semester, attending all but a few events/meetings, and have helped to recruit others for the events. I believe strongly in the quality of WLF and what I interpret as the underlying goals of facilitating networking with female lawyers in the state and fostering sisterhood.
  3. I am creative and have diverse interests. I have a number of exciting ideas for community outreach, including connecting WLF with female legislators in Salem and doing a capitol visit and luncheon. I feel strongly that WLF is an excellent resource for soon-to-be female lawyers and feel that I will be able to continue to produce events to the same high caliber as this years' WLF board.
  4. I do not have multiple commitments and will be focused on my WLF duties. While I do not have the experience in multiple student groups that some other candidates have, this is because for me, I have not felt drawn to a position until NOW! While not an official board member of other groups, I have been successful at running the Blood Drive and Food Drive for PAD, have volunteered at all of the fundraiser dances for the 2L class, PAD, and OLSPIF, and donated two live auction items for the OLSPIF auction this year.
  5. I am well-connected to the law school community and have been involved in a lot of the school events. Also, I have attended a wide range of events on campus and have attended and/or helped in the majority of student activities (like lunchtime talks) because I like being involved in the law school community and supporting others' efforts.

As a final note, I think that the Community Outreach position would work well as a two-lady operation and feel that I would be an excellent teammate to one of my peers! Thank you for your time and consideration!

Candidates for Conference Coordinator

Leah Besson -- Conference Coordinator

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time this year on the Women's Law Forum executive board. I would like to continue on the board next year in the position of conference coordinator. I believe the WLF is a very important group because we bring together women who are interested in diverse areas of the law, yet share a common interest in issues specific to women. This past year, I have worked with the other executive board members to help create and produce some of the best events at the law school. I want to continue this work next year by heading up the planning and production for a specific event, the Roosevelt Rush. Roosevelt Rush is a special event because it provides an opportunity for students and professors to meet and interact in a casual setting. I loved the work I did to prepare for Roosevelt Rush this past year, and I hope to be more involved in the planning process for the event next year. I think it is important that we continue to make this event new and exciting, while still holding on to its strong traditions, and I think I would be a good fit for this job. I have ideas about how to keep the event fresh, but also am fully committed to continuing the traditions that have made the event so successful in the past. In addition to Roosevelt Rush, I look forward to helping plan and put on other events with the WLF.

Additionally, I have lots of experience working in a small group setting. I have done both outreach and "liaison" type work with several different groups, from smaller, writing intensive student organizations, to large multicultural groups, both at my undergraduate school and abroad. Here at the law school, I have worked with several student groups, such as LSRJ, JELL, and the WLF, and also worked directly with students, as an LRW tutor. I am significantly scaling back my student group involvement for my 3L year, however, it is very important to me remain closely involved with the Women's Law Forum. Being on the WLF exec board this past year has been one of the best experiences I have had in law school, and I hope to continue my work with this group next year. Thank you for your consideration.

Katherine Bosch - Conference Coordinator

I would love to serve the Women's Law Forum as one of the Conference Coordinators for the 2009-2010 school year. I have always been interested in women's issues; as an undergraduate, learning about the ways that the law had traditionally disenfranchised women became one the factors in my decision to come to law school, in the hopes that I could contribute to the promotion of positive policy change for women. During my first year of law school, I worked as a Volunteer Intake Interviewer at Legal Aid and I frequently encountered women who would benefit from information on how to obtain financial independence and their right to be free from domestic violence of all kinds, physical as well as emotional. This inspired me to join the Women's Law Forum, which does so much to raise awareness on these issues as well as to provide networking opportunities for its members. This past year as a second year law student, I served on the WLF Executive Board as the Public Relations Officer, emailing notification of events to the listserv and organizing a speaker series highlighting Women and Money. In addition, I aided the board in organizing WLF's mixers and public service events. I would love to help WLF continue to raise community awareness through its speaker series as well to continue its community outreach. As the Conference Coordinator, I would use my strong organizational skills and knowledge of past WLF events to help put together our fantastic annual Roosevelt Rush. I would also be able to serve the board in any other capacity needed, including publicity, contacting professors and attorneys within the community, and creation of delicious snacks - and I mean delicious. Please vote for me. Thanks!

Lauren Fleming - Conference Coordinator

Before coming to law school, I worked as an event planner. I have coordinated the logistics for events as small as a 5 person business retreat to as large as a technology conference for 40,000 educators. My past responsibilities on events have included creating and balancing budgets, working as a point person for VIPs and celebrities, managing subcommittees and crews, and coordinating entertainment. I thrive in the environment surrounding an event, and especially enjoy the opportunity to interact with a variety of people. It is for this reason that I am applying for the Conference Coordinator position on the WLF Executive Board. I have attended multiple WLF events and have seen the positive impact that it has on the community. I am committed to helping continue that impact, and if elected, I plan to make WLF my top extra-curricular priority in my 2L year. My only other commitment is 2L representative to the SBA, and I know that this position will benefit my work with WLF. I come with an open mind full of creative ideas, and I hope to get the opportunity to help promote WLF as the Conference Coordinator.

Katherine Hunt - First Choice: Conference Coordinator; Second Choice: Community Outreach Coordinator

Allison Jordan - First Choice: Treasurer; Second Choice: Conference Coordinator

I would love the opportunity to contribute to the success of such an outstanding group. Participating with the WLF board would provide me the opportunity to expand my leadership experience. During my undergraduate career I worked with many different organizations geared toward aiding women and increasing awareness. At the YWCA, I worked with women in domestic violence and again at a transitional living center with drug involved women and children. WLF promotes the community awareness that is important to me which is why I am eager to be a part of this group. As a hard working, responsible individual, I would contribute a creative and hopeful outlook as to what the WLF will continue to accomplish. As treasurer, I could utilize the budgeting and cash handling skills I gained from working at a luxury golf resort. As conference coordinator, I could utilize my extensive habits of organization and dedication to follow through with whatever I undertake. Either of these positions would command my commitment and would get nothing less than 110% of my efforts.

Candidates for Director

Amy Rasmussen -- First choice: Director; Second Choice: Public Relations Officer

I would be proud to serve as the Director of the Women's Law Forum for the 2009-2010 school year. Although I will be a 2L next year, I think my demonstrated interest in women's issues and significant leadership and event-planning experience would enable me to serve successfully as Director. During college I served as President and Membership Chair of my sorority. I led multiple committees and organized philanthropic, seminars and social events for over eighty women. I was proud to represent my group within the school and on a national level, while working closely with the deans, faculty, alumnae and the community. During my senior year I was the campus Women's Issues Coordinator and organized speaker panels, dinner and founded and chaired a now-annual community breast cancer fundraiser. After graduation I was active on my sorority's advisory board and in the Junior League of Seattle. In addition to working with non-profits in the JLS, I was responsible for fundraising and donation procurement, and ran the night-of operations for our gala auction. This year I've enjoyed my involvement with the ADR Board as a fundraising coordinator.

I want to serve WLF as Director because the WLF is one of the most well-respected, well-funded and well-organized groups in the law school. I have been lucky to attend many of the WLF events this year, including Roosevelt Rush and the Oregon Women Lawyers Dinner. WLF has provided me with excellent opportunities to connect with faculty and community members from diverse legal backgrounds, and I am anxious to give back and expand upon the fabulous programs that WLF offers. I am outgoing, organized, detail-oriented and committed to the causes to which I dedicate myself. I work well in a team atmosphere and I am excited at the prospect of working with so many impressive women. This position would be my primary time commitment. Additionally, I would happy to serve as the Public Relations officer for the Board because of my event-planning and public service experience. Thank you in advance for your consideration!

Elizabeth Wooten - Director

My decision to study law is very much rooted in my interest in women's issues. As an undergrad, I started a campus women's group, was involved in the gender studies department, and organized a fundraiser for a local women's shelter. I also have made noise to help girls get empowered at the 'Willie Mae Rock and Roll Camp for Girls' in Brooklyn for two summers and worked at a non-profit family center in South Carolina. As Women's Law Forum 1L rep, I have solicited donations for our public service projects, assisted in Roosevelt Rush, and represented the group for university discussions.

WLF is a busy, focused group. The next director will have the exciting task of continuing this year's ambitious organization of conferences, speakers, and networking opportunities. If director, I would work to maintain the frequency and variety of events. I would particularly like to focus on our public services. The Women Space toiletry drive and Dress for Success fundraiser were projects introduced this year and I believe each should remain part of our community outreach. In addition, I would like to increase our accessibility to general membership. There is great enthusiasm and support within our student body that I'd like to see nourished and put to use. Smaller events for women to get to know each other could encourage dialog and spark new ideas. Likewise, I would support collaboration with other student organizations. WLF should have more communication with clubs like LSRJ, OUTLAWS and newly founded Law Students for Mental and Physical Sanity (MAPS), at the very least for scheduling's sake as many of our interests and members overlap. Finally, I know there has been discussion of a self-defense course on campus. This is a project WLF should definitely lead next year. I am looking forward to another year with the WLF and have the time the job as director demands. Elected or not, I am very eager to stay involved.

Haley Griffith - Secretary

Over the past school year, I have really enjoyed being the secretary for the Women's law forum. Continuing with this position over the next school year would allow me to continue being involved in a community of intelligent women who bring so many influential speakers and do so many important things for the school and the community at large. I believe I have shown that I possess the organizational and leadership skills necessary to succeed in the position, and I hope I am given the chance to continue as secretary. I was originally drawn to the Women's Law Forum because of my experiences as a Women's Studies major in undergrad. I was excited to find a group here that shared the same values as the community of women I worked with before law school. This is definitely a group I want to continuing being a part of and putting my energy into!

Candidates for Treasurer

Lauren Blaesing - Treasurer

This past year, I served as a 1L Representatives to the WLF Exec Board, and I had a wonderful experience helping put on many great events, including the 1L toiletry drive and the Dress for Success Clothing Drive and Mixer. I am running for the Treasurer position because WLF has a sizable budget and hosts several events, so it is important that WLF have a Treasurer who is organized and has experience on the Board. I have been shadowing the current Treasurer this year, and I am ready to take on the challenges of the position, including working on the budget with the ASUO and handling purchase orders for events. I am a very detail-oriented person, so I think I am well suited to serve this role, and I look forward to helping the Board use its budget to put on successful events next year. In addition, I will assist with Board with planning events, and I want to continue WLF's focus on providing networking opportunities for women law students with female faculty and practitioners.

Thank you for your consideration!
