Information for Graduates

GRADUATION INSTRUCTIONS for MAY 16, 2009

11:30 a.m.
Graduates will assemble in Studio One of the Hult Center (east side of building) at 11:30 a.m. for robing. Volunteers will assist you. Please do not enter through the Jacobs Room, which is used for the Platform Party.

Tassels should be on the left since you have already received your undergraduate degree. (As a graduate, you don't do the ceremonial 'flipping of the tassel.')

11:50 a.m.
The photographer will take class photos -- first the LL.M. graduates, then the J.D. graduates.

12:00 noon
Graduates are seated alphabetically in Studio One. (Name cards will be on seats). This is exactly how you will be seated in the auditorium so that you are called to the stage accurately.

Professor Mooney will approach each of you to check on the pronunciation of your name.

12:45 p.m.
Dean Gordon will review instructions about the processional.

12:50 p.m.
Professor Mooney will call the names of graduates who were not present earlier. Those not present will have their names removed from list (ring) of graduates to be announced in the ceremony.

12:55 p.m.
Professor Mooney and Sherie Etges, will lead you (in alphabetical order) from Studio One through the Jacobs Room. You will proceed up the stairs, through the Hult Center Lobby, and enter the back of the Silva Hall Auditorium.

1:00 p.m.
When the processional music begins, graduates will continue proceeding down the left-hand aisle toward the stage. The Graduates will sit in the center rows at the front of the auditorium (in alphabetical order). Make sure that each seat in the row is filled before the next row begins. Professor Mooney, Sherie Etges, the SBA President, the third-year class representatives, and the J.D and LL.M. class speakers will turn and stand at the front.

After the graduates are filed in, the platform party will proceed down the right-hand aisle of the concert hall. Professor Mooney, Sherie Etges, and presenting graduates will take their places on to the stage and remain standing. Graduates also remain standing until Dean Paris welcomes everyone and asks all to be seated.

AWARDING OF THE DEGREES: The graduates stand as President Frohnmayer confers the degrees. Dean Paris will ask all to be seated except for those in the front row who should make their way to the stage. Volunteers will assist you with this process. As you approach the stage, wait for a volunteer to give you the "go ahead" to cross the stage. As the aisle clears, the volunteer will cue the next row to make their way to the aisle and line up toward the stage. Only one row at a time should stand.

As your name is called, you will cross the stage and shake the hands of President Frohnmayer and Dean Paris. Please face the audience at that time for a quick photo. Then, you will receive a record of commencement from Sherie Etges and exit the stage from the steps on that side. LL.M. graduates and concurrent CRES graduates will receive your record of commencement from Professor Kravchenko and Professor Hicks. Students on the platform party will return to your seat on stage after receiving your record of commencement. Please remain seated except when it is time for your row to enter the aisle so the audience can see. Should your name be skipped (which should not happen), step to the right side of the stage and give the volunteer who will be there your name. That person will quietly go backstage and get a note to the commencement marshal and he will then call your name.

Dean Paris will adjourn the gathering to the reception.

A recessional will be played for the platform party to exit by, followed by the graduates; please wait for the cue. You can meet your guests in the Hult Center lobby after the ceremony.

Return robes in Studio One after the ceremony.
