Dear Law Student:

The Holding is an attempt by the School of Law faculty and staff to alert you to many opportunities, policies and procedures. We ask you to study this handbook and use it as a resource guide. The faculty, administrative staff and the dean are available to answer or direct you to answers to your questions.

As a law student you have already begun your professional life. Therefore, we ask you to give particularly careful attention to the University's Student Conduct Code. The legal profession relies upon self-policing of the code of ethics by its members. The Honor Code is an integral part of our community. These standards of conduct are central to membership in a learned profession which aspires to advance the public welfare. Cultivation of professionalism and the highest degree of intergrity must be part of your life from the very first day of law school.

I continue to be amazed by all the policies, rules, administrative procedures and details contained in this resource guide. As essential as these are, we welcome your thoughts for corrections, improvements and streamlining.

We hope that you will take advantage of the opportunities and resources available to you as a student of the University of Oregon and the School of Law. I am particularly anxious to have you stop by my office and introduce yourself. I look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

Margaret L. Paris
Dean and Elmer Sahlstrom Senior Fellow
